What brings you great joy in life? What makes you feel alive and filled with purpose? For me, it begins with sitting still with my Bible open, reading and absorbing God’s word, and allowing the circumstances and troubles of my life to come face-to-face with the living words of God. God never fails to meet me right where I am, ready to reveal to me the things my heart and mind need to understand. And the greatest point of this experience comes when my thoughts and God’s word converge on the written page.
For me, the written page is a computer screen, and once my fingers start typing, I can sense that what I have learned in my quiet time with the Lord is now becoming alive to me. The act of writing is the catalyst that boosts my mind into a more active, energizing level, where God can truly break through the clutter and passivity of my mind and reach me where he needs to. It is here that I learn things I had never considered before, and I can see with such clarity the power of God’s word to truly change my life.
This is God’s gift to me. My time spent alone with him – reading, writing, and communicating with him – is not a burden; it is a blessing. To me, the joy of writing is this: to meet God and to know and love him in a deeper way, and to be changed because of it. Any sacrifice of my time is actually a joyful offering to him, for when I am with him, I am alive and full of purpose. I am the person he created me to be.
The greatest gift God can give us is simply more of himself, and it changes us from the inside out, transforming us into who he has called us to be. There is no greater joy in life than that. Nothing can match the impact of his words upon our lives or the peace that his presence brings. He is light and life to all those who believe; only he can fill our lives with purpose and meaning. I am so thankful that he has allowed me to find such joy in him, as I sit quietly in his presence letting his words speak to me and responding to him with mine.
