The One Who Is with Us

And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but Jesus was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.  Matthew 8:24-26 The darkest days of our lives are kind of like the storm on the sea. We feel like we’ve run out of hope, like there is no way out of the darkness. We panic and even cry out, “Save us, Lord,” in the midst of our fear, hoping He will do something to rescue us. But Read More

The Power of Grace

Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness,     prisoners suffering in iron chains, because they rebelled against God’s commands      and despised the plans of the Most High. So he subjected them to bitter labor;      they stumbled, and there was no one to help. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,      and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness,      and broke away their chains. (Psalm 107: 10-14) These verses are my story. I pray that every day I walk on this earth, I will not forget the dark places I have been, the places where I sat in the utter darkness of sin, shame, and disgrace, where I Read More

Following Jesus

And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” Matthew 8:19-20 What an interesting reply Jesus had to this man who declared that he would follow Him wherever He went. Jesus did not say, “Welcome to the team!” or “Great to have you aboard!” Instead, he told the scribe that foxes and birds had homes, but He did not. Interesting. Why did he say that? What was he trying to tell this man? That he shouldn’t follow Him? I think that more likely He simply wanted to confront this well-intentioned man Read More

Unashamed

Have you ever denied God in front of others? Have you ever been that person who just sat quietly by as others insulted your Savior or some of His followers? Unfortunately, there was a period of time in my life when that was true of me. There were several instances in my past in which I just shut my mouth as I listened to those around me criticize Christianity and portray its followers in various stereotypical ways. I certainly didn’t want to be portrayed in a similar light. And I certainly didn’t want to embrace the idea that any type of suffering would be a part of my Christian faith. I wanted the easy Christian life, you know, the kind where you can gain all Read More

Loathsome Quail

“You (Israelites) have wept in the hearing of the LORD, saying, ‘Who will give us meat to eat? For it was better for us in Egypt.’ Therefore the Lord will give you meat, and you shall eat…until it comes out at your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you, because you have rejected the Lord who is among you…” (Numbers 11:18-20) The verses sure do convey a disgusting picture, but they hit me with such truth as I read them.  The entire passage of Numbers 11 shows a people who were not thankful for what the Lord had given them, but instead were consumed with desire for what they did not have, for what they thought they needed. These verses took me back years in my Read More
